All of this seems overblown to me. Colbert is second in the late night ratings to the Tonight Show, just like Dave was. He has a sharper and more narrow appeal than Leno/Fallon, just like Dave did. He makes a broadcast television show, not a series of clips for the internet - again like Dave. He is doing a different show than Dave, and Dave doesnt have to like it, but the show he is doing is filling about the same niche as Dave's, with about the same ratings, and is no doubt cheaper. The idea of replacing him with Corden, who seems nice enough but hardly compelling enough to get me to sit through his entire 8 minute segment on Colbert, much less watch any of his own show, is absurd.
OTOH, the piece does make a few points I had trouble disagreeing with. Colbert does in some ways seem to be playing more of a character now than he was on the Report. And he does seem oddly bored and impatient with many of his guests. He may get better at this - even if he doesnt I like him and his show enough to keep watching, and it seems like there are enough others who agree to make his show very profitable for CBS for a long time.
