“just as canned and artificial as Dave's ever were,”

I don’t have the vocabulary to express how much I disagree with this phrase.
Dave was “canned and artificial”? Granted, he could occasionally phone it in
when he was forced to interview the hunk/bimbo flavor of the month, who had
nothing to offer other than “here’s a scene of me in my new movie.” But for
most of second half of the Late Show run, starting from around the time of his
heart surgery, Dave had grown into the best interviewer in late night (well,
except maybe for Craig Ferguson)…on his best nights, better than Carson had
ever done.

I wish they were trying harder to avoid Dave's Late Show. I watch the comedy
bits, but SC's interview segments are just as canned and artificial as Dave's
ever were, even when they are (awkwardly) leading into prepared material. Oh,
what I'd give for spontaneity.

As I think about this, it seems clearer and clearer to me that there are two
shows the Colbert people are trying to avoid:

1. The Report. It may well be that Colbert himself didn't/doesn't want to play
the character any more, and they may have all felt that they took that idea as
far as it will go. With the new show, everyone might have felt it best to make
clear that the old one is over, and that they won't do anything to make anyone
think that they're bringing the old character back.

2. Dave's Late Show. Not only is this a chance to "re-invent" the late night
talk show, but I think there's also so much respect for what Dave did that
Stephen and Company think they'll come off poorly by comparison. Conan had a
similar policy on Late Night for a long time, and it really did help him when
they loosened that up and started doing remotes and whatnot, although it also
helped both generally and specifically that Conan had found his voice by then.

Taking all that ground away leaves a pretty narrow strip, and Colbert hasn't
found a spot in it where he's comfortable. Once (if?) he does, he and the staff
will probably be more willing to add stuff that's reminiscent of their two
predecessors, and they'll be a lot better off than they are now adding stuff
that's reminiscent of their competitors.
