I get caught with this occasionally too. Outlets like Daily Kos email a list of their "greatest hits" with old news stories and tidbits without clearly highlighting the date.People post things to FB all the time that are months and years old as if they just happened. It is very easy to respond under that assumption.
I subscribed to that WWII service on the Twitter that comments on events from the European theater as if they were happening today, but so far I have not made the mistake of posting in breathless tones to my FB page that the Germans have broken through the Ardennes, but I might well do something like that one day.
