I have been thinking about the sound we get on the television coverage of
conventions, both for the RNC and DNC. I think maybe somebody here (or was
it somewhere else?) mentioned the idea of "sweetening" the sound at things
like this, with added applause or laughter. I would not approve of that of
course - but I would like to see better control of the mix of sound from
the platform vs sound from the floor. Sometimes you can not really hear
what the speaker is saying very well, not so much because of demonstrations
from the floor, but just ambient noise and kind of hall echo effects. Other
times what the speaker is saying seems to fall flat because you can not
hear any real response from the hall, even though you know there is a
response. During the RNC I had a friend in the hall who posted some short
video from the floor during one of the speakers and you could hear a very
enthusiastic audience response, but I had watched that same speech on
television, and it seemed like the speaker was getting crickets.

I am wondering if we don't see more aggressive mixing of the sound because
for some reason it is not technically possible, or if it would open the
networks up to charges of editorial manipulation - making Bernie sound like
he got a big response, while minimizing the response to HIllary? I do want
to hear it when the crowd makes important demonstrations (like with Panetta
last night) but most of the time, I would like the crowd noise turned down
while the speaker is talking, and turned up during pauses to hear the
response.
