My NBC station did that years ago-if they had a NBA doubleheader or a late
season/playoff NFL game, then the syndicated programming would eat the
overrun. it was rare for a NBA game or a NFL game on Saturdays to go past
8:00 and cause their lineup(which in those days were the Carsey-Werner
comedies ("Golden Girls", "Empty Nest", etc) and "Sisters") to be delayed
or preempted(NBC's policy at least back then, was to preempt a show if the
game ran to a designated length.)
