I would not mind that much if they had shown the first period ending
something like 5 to 1, and then said something like "it only got worse from
there for the Americans, we are skipping the second period and most of the
third (you can watch it all online at our website if you want) - here is
how the game ended".

But that is not a perfect parallel, because a gymnastics meet has more than
two teams. In this case, it was not a boring blowout, there were lots of
compelling story-lines, including a US storyline that just did not end
heroically for Americans. It is more like a hockey game in which the
network had been hyping two star players, and the game is close and
dramatic but the two stars make a lot of mistakes and are eventually
benched for the last exciting period, and the network decides not to show
more than half the game and switches to the semi-finals of the breaststroke.
