I think Lowe's politics currently are somewhere in between Kevin and
Melissa's descriptions. He was a Dukakis Democrat when he was videotaped
having sex with a teenager in 1988, and he did famously twitter-dis Bernie
Sanders last year during a debate, implying that he (Lowe) was against
raising taxes on the wealthy to pay for more socialized programs. But I
don't think it is fair to describe him as one of those "Hollywood
Republicans"; he has sounded more like one of those warmed over superficial
libertarians to me.

But, my question was not: "What is a conservative doing at a Rob Lowe
Roast?" I am a liberal, and socialize and am good friends with lots of
conservatives, and don't see anything inherently contradictory about that.
It is an insult to conservatives to call Ann Coulter a conservative; she is
soul-less gold-digging self-promoter, who makes her living saying in public
the most horrible things she can think of.

My question rather was why did she think it was in her financial self
interest to appear at the roast. When asked she basically said it was to
sell copies of the new Trump book she just published; but the thesis of
that book is that you can trust Trump because he says what he believes and
does not trim his sails to political correctness to please the elites. The
book was published the same day that Trump recently backtracked on his
deportation promise (since then he and or his representatives have both
taken back, and not taken back, the softening of his position on
deportation, the result being a serious undermining of his main credential
for the hard core Trumpsters, and of the point of Coulter's book).

Coulter's appearance in what would appear to be the belly of the beast
makes sense from a book selling POV prior to Trump's flip flopping, but
seems to only highlight her main humiliation now. Perhaps she was already
under contract and could not have gotten out of it.
