As seems to be the case with modern reboots, they take a few character
names and assume that alone made the series. The characters are only barely
like the originals, and the cosmetic changes don't add value to the
original concept.

I agree with David that much of the original series didn't age well, but
there are several episodes that still work (let's all just pretend the
final season in the "neighborhood" never happened, ok?). What doesn't work
is that the original series was family friendly... it was wholesome... and
tv shows don't do that anymore. Mac's boss now has to be an attractive
female, not a bald chubby guy. And he needs a hot female computer expert at
his side. And instead of having D Day from Animal House play the bumbling
Jack Dalton, the character now has to be a gun toting muscle man (in the
original series, Mac didn't kill and he didn't condone other friends of his
killing either, but this Mac kills a boatload of people in the cold open,
and is fine with Jack shooting anybody he wants).

I think I'd like the pilot episode more if it WASN'T MacGyver. Give me a
series about a master improvisational trouble shooter and I'll give it a
whirl. But this wasn't MacGyver.
