When MNF first came on, the half time highlights were one of the best parts
of the show, partly because of Howard (who as a kid I actually loved) but
also because even if you, as I always did, watched two games on Sunday and
then read the paper the next day, there was still a lot you did not know
about most of the games.

McDonough is fine - just not flashy. I have never been a fan of Gruden's
schtick, and maybe, as JW was saying in another similar thread, most people
are starting to tire of it.

But the real reason MNF is not as special as it used to be is that it is
not as special as it used to be. First, SNF is now the premium prime time
football package (and the very best football broadcast on television). MNF
is really the old ESPN SNF, which means it gets B and often C rated
match-ups. Second, the NFL has diluted the shit out of its product.
Thursday night football threatens to make October and November football
about as special as November NBA games.

I certainly don't see any broadcaster who could suddenly make MNF special
again by himself.
