I remember that the show was delayed a long time, and the late news didn't get going till 11:53 P.M. The Emmys were affected by 9/11 in fact twice! I've always wondered how would they handle such a event these days, if for example there was a attack before the Super Bowl or the Oscars. Almost surely they would cancel?
