The Canadian pubcaster has been ad-supported in part for all of the over 80
years it's been in existence, with the TV network currently running ads
(the radio networks only run political ads during national elections)--the
net claims that the additional funding will allow it to wean off of
advertising and be more like the BBC (although they haven't said anything
about a possible license fee on TV sets, probably because they know the
Tories, who want the CBC privatized for its alleged "liberal bias," will
fight a license fee tooth and nail--and have already said that they will
fight the proposal for additional funds:

For the record, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation has been funded by
general government support for over 45 years (the only other funds it gets
are from sales of videos and other tie-in items, either online or in shops
at its studios and in the country's major cities) and New Zealand's
pubcasting system, although state owned, has been deregulated, with ads on
every channel and the grumbling in the chattering classes of "dumbing
down." Australia's second pubcaster, SBS, has been running ads since 1991
and when the original policy of running ads only between programs was
changed about 15 years ago (supposedly to combat channel changes during
those long between-program breaks while the commercial networks have pretty
much adapted the U.S. "seamless" model) to initial complaints about
programming being scarred, but it seems to have been accepted as a
necessary evil.
