So another "carriage" dispute over who pays how much for DirecTV
re-transmitting station content owned by Hearst Television, has put
millions of satellite customers in the position of having no ABC
programming available through their satellite system. I am affected
somewhat by this, as we live in a rural area that can only get cable
programming via a satellite dish. We have had DirecTV since 2000 and for
the most part it has served us well. We have a few issued during heavy
thunderstorms, but it is generally reliable and I like the lineup the
basic, inexpensive package offers us.
But this argument has caused the DTV to display a blue screen with a
message about the financial disagreement, instead of ABC programming and
local news. We are fortunate to have an antenna as well, so we can switch
to TV to watch shows, but if there is a conflict with two or more programs
on at the same time, we have no way to record from the TV, as we got rid of
the old VCRs when we got the DirecTV DVR. Many of my friends don't have an
antenna though, and are extremely irate (especially retirees or the
disabled, who watch TV virtually all day long) about the situation. I find
it frustrating that two giant corporations have to use the viewers as pawns
in their disagreement. We all know you will decide on a price halfway
between what is offered and what is asked. Just do it.
