Dax Shepard was on Marc Maron's WTF on Monday talking about putting
together and making CHiPs. Nothing he said made me want to watch the movie
but the way he described the process was interesting. He wanted to make a
motorcycle chase movie. The only way a studio might show any interest is if
had major stars or was part of an established brand. Shepard knew that
Warners owned the CHiPs brand and there were several movie attempts that
failed. He pitched writing a CHiPs script to Warners and left with a
commitment to write, direct, and star in the movie. When he was asked about
the budget he said that he could make a PG action movie for $45 million.
During the development process Warners cut back on the budget and when it
got to $25 million Shepard said it would have to go to an R rating to be
successful as blood, gore, and nudity would have to replace stunts.

Shepard said that opening week could determine what he does for the next
ten years. If the movie opens big, even if only in foreign markets, he can
count on making at least two sequels.
