Let's assume it was serious. He could personally call, or have his manager
or publicist call, Late Night producers or NBC and tell them that he was
hurt by what Dave said on his show. History shows that Dave would have
apologized and moved on, meaning he would not mention Maury again. Maury
could also let Connie know that he was hurt and she would stop appearing on
the show or at least let Dave know he went over a line.

The fact that neither of these things happened leads me to believe it is
all for show.
