For something real and not-so-sad from Kimmel, I'd point to when Stamos and
Saget came on to remember Don Rickles.  While not as raw as Jimmy's grief from
the week before, the affection the three have for Rickles (and to a lesser
extent each other) was evident and from where I sat quite genuine.
This may be because I don't check in with any of the Jimmys on the regular, but
the times I remember Kimmel coming across so openly were times of sadness.
I think Conan's had more of these moments since moving to cable, though his
last days at NBC were full of them.
Then there's Craig.

crossword puzzle editor, you could tell how much he loved crosswords. When
Letterman first told the story of a bear breaking into his home, you could see
the childlike glee with which he shared this odd experience. Watching Jay
Leno's YouTube channel and seeing him talk passionately about cars is
infinitely better than he ever was as a Tonight Show host. Watching Johnny
Carson genuinely elated when a new comic had a killer debut set on his Tonight
Show, you could see the sparkle in his eyes and know that comic was gonna be a
star.
There is too much pretense in the business today. I'm not even sure Jimmy
Fallon knows who he really is, let alone be able to be as open about his life
as Kimmel was yesterday.

Exactly. This is what Dave at his best was so could at. And it's not easy to do.

This was stunning.
We had a scare with birth of our first child, never came close to talking about
it this honestly with even the small group of people I know.

Yeah, and at the risk of sounding insensitive of these specific circumstances,
seeing someone being so open and honest with what they are thinking and feeling
and experiencing is incredible to watch. I understand why late night has to be
all laughs and "watch my movie" and "buy my album," but when somebody is so
true and so real... that is the power of the medium. I wish Kimmel and his
family nothing but health and happiness, but I also wish we could see the real
Jimmy Kimmel (the highs and the lows) on a more consistent basis.
