Taken from Variety, new shows in all caps, all times ET:
MONDAY:
8:00 p.m. “Dancing with the Stars”
10:00 p.m. THE GOOD DOCTOR--Freddie Highmore, who just finished
playing Norman Bates in "Bates Motel," is now playing an autistic savant
surgeon (I'll make Brad do the movie comparison if it fits the rules of
haiku) saves lives at a prestigious hospital and pisses off his fellow
workers. From "House" creator David Shore, who knows something about
surgeons who piss people off.
TUESDAY:
8:00 p.m. “The Middle”
8:30 p.m. “Fresh Off the Boat” (new time period)
9:00 p.m. “black-ish” (new day and time period)
9:30 p.m. THE MAYOR--An aspiring African-American rapper runs for
mayor of his town as a stunt and you know what's coming next. Daveed
Diggs, Tony winner for "Hamilton," is trophy producer of this one-camera
show and the names you know in the cast are Yvette Nicole Brown as his
mother and Lea Michele as his girl friend.
10:00 p.m. THE GOSPEL OF KEVIN--Ne'er do well, self-serving Kevin
(played by Jason Ritter) is forced to live with his sister (JoAnna Garcia
Swisher) until an angel anoints him to save the world. Uh huh.
WEDNESDAY:
8:00 p.m. “The Goldbergs”
8:30 p.m. “Speechless”
9:00 p.m. “Modern Family”
9:30 p.m. “American Housewife” (new day and time period)
10:00 p.m. “Designated Survivor”
You may notice that there's been a bit of switching around in the Tuesday
and Wednesday night sitcom blocks.
THURSDAY:
8:00 p.m. “Grey’s Anatomy”
9:00 p.m. “Scandal”
10:00 p.m. “How to Get Away with Murder”
It's "Scandal"'s last season and perhaps the last year of "TGIT"--at least
an all-Shondaland "TGIT."
FRIDAY:
8:00 p.m. “Once Upon a Time” (new day and time period)
As if ABC is saying, "Listen, morons--'Last Man Standing' was on for six
years, everyone's contract was up, they'd all be asking for more money,
it's already in syndication and making a ton of money that we'll never see
because WE DON'T OWN THE SHOW (well, maybe Disney will see some money from
the reruns on Freeform), so enough with this Hollywood liberal crap--oh by
the way, didn't you notice that we cancelled the show about the gay kid,
too, WHICH WE OWNED?" ("The Real O'Neals")
9:00 p.m. MARVEL'S INHUMANS--Since "Agents of SHIELD" hasn't been
that popular, here's a direct comic book adaptation from the House of Ideas
with an unprecedented way of starting: The first two episodes will be
shown in IMAX at theaters in early September and those episodes will replay
on ABC with additional material that will not be in the big-screen versions.
10:00 p.m. “20/20”
SATURDAY:
8:00 p.m. “Saturday Night Football”
SUNDAY:
7:00 p.m. “America’s Funniest Home Videos”
8:00 p.m. “To Tell the Truth” (new day and time period)
The first Fun and Games title to get a fall schedule berth, as ABC decides
to go the low road on TV's most-watched night and be mostly mass appeal
reality (and I have so many problems with this ill-advised reboot of a
classic game show format that I don't have time to list them).
9:00 p.m. “Shark Tank” (new day and time period)
10:00 p.m. TEN DAYS IN THE VALLEY--TV cop procedural showrunner Kyra
Sedgwick loses her daughter and life begins to imitate art for her. Also
in the cast is Erika Christensen and Theo Hux--all right, Malcolm Jamal
Warner, on the only new fall series that isn't produced or co-produced by
Unca Walt (it's from Skydance, the company that's affiliated with
dormant-in-TV Paramount for its feature films).
The mid-season series:
DRAMAS:
THE CROSSING--A band of refugees led by Steve Zahn show up in a New England
fishing village. Where are they in flight from? The United States.
Trump's gonna love this one.
DECEPTION--A superstar magician feels that there's only one place to really
use his talents--the FBI. I hear they've got an opening at the top. Greg
Berlanti takes time out from doing comic book shows for the CW for this
show, one of the few new shows solely owned by someone other than Disney
(Warners, to be exact).
FOR THE PEOPLE--Shondaland turns to courtroom dramas, with the brilliant
Anna Devere Smith along to pay her mortgage.
COMEDIES:
ALEX, INC.--Zach Braff's back on TV behind the camera with a one-cam sitcom
about a public radio guy who decides to start his own company. It's the
first OTA net series based on a podcast ("Start Up"--"Maron" was first on
cable.)
SPLITTING UP TOGETHER--Ellen DeGeneres produces this one-cam based on a
Danish series about a married couple who gets divorced--and their
relationship is back in action. The couple's played by Oliver Hudson and
Jenna Fischer and it's solely owned by Warners (and the Danish producers).
ALTERNATIVE:
AMERICAN IDOL--You knew about this one. They ain't sayin' nothin' about
the host or judges.
THE BACHELOR WINTER GAMES--Yes, it's an all-reboot or brand extension
reality slate at ABC. With the Winter Olympics starting late in February
on another network, a slate of former "Bachelor/Bachelorette" contestants
will be competing in the snow, on ice and in the bedroom earlier in the
month. I assume Chris Harrison, who used to be a sportscaster, will be the
front man for this one.
DANCING WITH THE STARS JUNIOR--If you loved watching those cute kids outwit
Gordon Ramsay on "MasterChef Junior," here's D-list kid celebs and progeny
of D-list celebs matched with professional junior ballroom dancers to do
what the grownups do. This may replace the spring cycle of the regular
"DWTS"--and if Tom, Erin, Len, Bruno, Carrie Ann and Julienne have any
sense about them, they will stay far, far away from this. Adam, don't tell
me that there's going to be a "Strictly Junior" over on your side.
Take it, Brad.
