NBC has released a new SNL app. It has a fairly comprehensive library of “Saturday Night Live” clips. It plays full episodes using the NBC app.
It’s a bit buggy but I liked what I saw. I got to revisit some great Phil Hartman clips. I got to check out the same joke of teenage characters played by Katy Perry and Lindsay Lohan suddenly sprouting breasts (Perry did it much better). It lets you sort either by newest or oldest. The first time I did a Tina Fey search, I got bit parts she played in the cast early on. Like the lesbian audience member asking Lucy Lawless a question. Then when I searched again, the earliest it would show was the Weekend Update where George Bush was declared the presidential winner. It’s not comprehensive. The earliest Steve Martin includes him referring to his prior SNL appearance. No Milton Berle or Steven Segal. I’d like to see the Berle episode just to see how bad it really is. I watched several clips without getting a commercial. I wonder if that’s because it’s new or if that is deliberate strategy by NBC with the launch of the app. I watch SNL either through YouTube clips or using the NBC app. They seem to be experimenting with digital medium. One week almost all the clips will be on the app with a handful on YouTube, the next YouTube is stuffed with the clips and the app is sparse. The app has ads, sometimes way too many, before each clip. YouTube seldom has ads. -- -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
