Lindsay Ell is a perky blonde purveyor of Today's Hot New Country that
would be dismissed as another Taylor Swift wannabe by the self-proclaimed
keepers of the true C&W flame if it wasn't for the fact that women acts are
fighting to get what meager airplay they can get. She's on the road
opening for Brad Paisley and CBS' (soon to be Entercom's) KNCI in
Sacramento, the city's dominant country station, announced a promotion
where listeners would get a chance to hang out in both her tour bus and bus
of the fellow opening act Chase Bryant (that name sounds more like a soap
opera character than a country singer) and hear an acoustic performance.
Until someone noticed that her boyfriend for the last two years is Bobby
Bones, the former Top 40 DJ who became a country DJ and whose morning show
is syndicated by iHeart's Premiere Radio Networks and heard in Sacramento
on iHeart's KBEB "The Bull," the station that was created to challenge
KNCI. KNCI abruptly cancelled the promotion. Ell, after tweeting
criticizing the station (without mentioning who her BF was), then showed up
at iHeart's Sacramento cluster to play live in the studio for Bull
listeners (and with the station announcing that they were playing her new
single every hour on the hour last Friday) and then showed up at another
competitor who wasn't cowed. KNCI later apologized, but the damage had
been done (hopefully, this Google URL will miss the paywall):

Ell has not hidden her relationship, but not made a big deal about it
either, because of radio airplay being so important. Bones, for his part,
said that he and Ell had initially kept their relationship secret for the
very same reason. Meanwhile, Ell is on Kimmel tomorrow night.
