Because I found the subject interesting, I watched most
of this documentary on PBS World Monday night.
Unfortunately, I missed parts of it due to technical problems.
The first problem was that the closed captions often
obscured on-screen labels that gave a person's name and
other info.
The second problem was that I couldn't see info
displayed near the edges of the screen (e.g. during a
display of a map of the USA). I was able to correct that
problem by changing the aspect ratio from "CROPPED" to
"SQUEEZED" - but not before the map had disappeared from the
screen.
The third problem was related to the second. I.e.
while I had the aspect ratio set to "SQUEEZED", small text
on the screen was very difficult to read. Unfortunately,
"SET FOR LIFE" displayed lots of small text. Compounding
that, "SET FOR LIFE" often displayed that small text for a
relatively short periods of time.
Consequently, I was unable to read much of the text
through the majority of "SET FOR LIFE". Then, for a final
insult, "SET FOR LIFE" concluded by displaying full screens
of similarly small text for similarly short periods of time.
So, I've been wondering, do the people who buy the
rights to broadcast documentaries like "SET FOR LIFE" even
see these problems?
("SET FOR LIFE" is hardly the only program in which I see
problems like this - it's just most recent example.
At least I did not see "SET FOR LIFE" display any white
subtitles over a light colored background (a practice that
I've seen in many other programs which is similarly
effective at hiding information).
