I missed "A Catered Affair," but I've seen him six times on Broadway: two
dramas (as the sheriff in "The Trip to Bountiful" with Cicely Tyson,
Vanessa Williams and Cuba Gooding Jr., and as the customer James Lingk in
"Glengarry Glen Ross" with Alan Alda, Liev Schreiber and Jeffrey Tambor),
and four musicals ("Annie Get Your Gun," "Sondheim on Sondheim," "Catch Me
If You Can," and the first show I ever saw on Broadway, "City of Angels" in
1990).
Say what you will about the guy, but he's a *major* talent.
And I say that as someone who was never able to sit through more than a few
minutes of "The Dukes of Hazzard."
BTW, did anyone else see his ill-fated attempt at hosting a talk show,
"Prime Time Country" on the Nashville Network in 1996? He had to start
every show doing a stand-up monologue, and the one night I watched the
jokes were so bad that the audience booed all through the monologue. He
looked completely embarrassed. He left after 13 weeks and was replaced by
an actual comedian, Gary Chapman.
