WFMU, the New Jersey non-commercial "free form" station that basically (with a few exceptions) dares you to listen to it for any length of time, has made a Kickstarter campaign (with the help of program host and creator of "Monk" Andy Breckman) which has been successful enough to rent a billboard on New Jersey's Interstate 280--their first conventional advertising campaign of any kind--with the following copy: "RHIANNA. BIEBER. MANSON. WFMU 91.1 FM." And yes, they don't mean either Marilyn or Shirley:
http://www.adweek.com/creativity/why-this-radio-station-just-put-charles-manson-on-a-billboard-it-admits-is-tasteless/ The idea is to promote the fact that they have a new morning drive program called "Wake and Bake" after years of brokering a show called "Jewish Moments in the Morning," which was a point of controversy around the station because of its neo-conservative lean (the show was eventually dropped from the Internet stream, although it was heard OTA, and replaced by new DJs on a station that's very difficult to get on the lineup, due to jocks that have been there forever--for no money). The show, hosted by "Clay Pigeon," is the only strip programming on a station that doesn't carry any conventional syndicated programming, won't take underwriting and basically survives from one one-week pledge drive a year and an annual record fair in Manhattan (where hipsters have been known to come up with complicated antennas to pick up the station). If the money from the Kickstarter keeps coming in, they plan to put up a separate billboard with: "ASSAULT--DUI--TAX EVASION--POLKA."
