“The Opposition with Jordan Klepper” debuted over night with a thud. The conceit of the show is that Klepper is an Alex Jones-style conspiracy nut job like Stephen Colbert was a Bill O'Reilly parody. The show spent a lot of time explaining itself and introducing the cast. Maybe it will take a few strides to get going. But the original show demonstrates Klepper is ill-suited for this kind of character. Larry Wilmore has to be thinking, “They cancelled me for this?” First off, Alex Jones is already a self parody. They showed a clip of him saying the Clintons practice voodoo. It is tough to get more absurd than that. Klepper's best moments on “The Daily Show” were with his dry irony in the field pieces. He seems ill-suited in this kind of character. This is a tribute to Colbert he could keep a character engaging through the show. Wilmore's show stumbleed before it found its legs. I don’t remember Colbert’s first shows. He had the advantage of creating the character on “The Daily Show.” Maybe Klepper can gel. By the way, the head of Comedy Central said he wants to create shows with more international appeal. I don’think this is it.
