“Patton Oswalt: Annihilation” is a deeply personal comedy special on Netflix as Oswalt deals with his wife’s sudden death. I just finished it and it may take a year or two for me to fully appreciate it.
I am an Oswalt fan and most of the jokes land. There’s a few chunks that don’t work, but they are there for a reason. Like when Oswalt does crowd work in the middle of the show. Typically comedians consider crowd work as filler. But then he explains that was a kind of sorbet to cleanse the palate as he goes into his wife's death. It is perhaps a testament to Oswalt’s talent he is able to get humor out of death and a cemetery. In terms of overall humor, the jokes are good. I heard many I want to steal. At a few places he seems to affect Marc Maron mannerisms. I wonder if Maron helped out? The core of the show though is that delicate balance of humor, grief and sentiment. I follow Oswalt on Twitter and he has proclaimed his love for fiancée Meredith Salenger. So he seems to be moving on. Not sent from an iPhone. -- -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
