Not ranked as high as getting to shake Letterman's hand, but nonetheless
something I've been trying to do for years by entering the lottery every
August. Never had any luck.

Until this past Thursday, when I got home from my volunteer job and a check
of my email revealed an invitation to attend the dress rehearsal of SNL.
 Yesterday.

Now, what caused a major groan on my part is that that (Thursday) morning I
had just gotten back from a one-day trip to NYC, which is something I do a
couple of times a year when there's a particular Broadway show I want to
see. [This time it was "The Band's Visit" which was followed by a talk
back with the cast, including "Monk" (making this aside TV related); I also
saw a matinee performance of "Once On This Island" (which included two cast
members who had done well on TV reality show competitions].

But of course I couldn't pass up an opportunity I had been hoping for. So
a friend and I took the Greyhound up and back again yesterday and this
morning. Nothing like being sleep deprived twice within three days.

It worked out just fine. An initial bad seat turned into a pretty good
seat, and it was really quite fascinating to watch the production take
place in incredibly limited floor space. Probably every square inch was
used at some point in the show. The coordination among dozens of prop
people was amazing. Nobody got bumped into or stepped on. At least not
that I saw.

What I will need to do is watch the actual show (which I DVRed) to find out
what made the final cut, and what didn't. Since I believed that less than
half the skits worked, I already know that a lot of bad stuff made the
show. I am curious what didn't make it.

I'm not a fan of musical guest Chris Stapleton, but it could have been much
worse. (I think the worst musical guest this season was the woman with
three letters in her name.)

When we were leaving the studio, I thought of this group. Because the path
we were shown out of the SNL space led directly into the NBC store, where
it was assumed that we were eager to buy as much memorabilia as we could
carry. I resisted.
