They produced an HD 4:3 version for laserdisc (remember those?) release years ago. The DVD versions were produced in 16:9 but SD. The masters of what was shot are all in 16:9 film and can be converted to HD with no problems, but the 16:9 CGI was produced in SD and it would be cost prohibitive to have that redone.
