Dave's daytime show was on NBC, not CBS, and after it got cancelled NBC gave him a development deal to keep him while they worked on finding something that could work. When Joan Rivers went to FOX, Carson found out when the FOX press conference aired. Edgar and Joan aggressively went after people on his staff to bring them on to the new show. In the recent Garry Shandling doc they said that NBC approached Shandling and Leno to become permanent guest host after Rivers left.
