I’m still dealing with all the paperwork and beurocracy that accompanies
the death of a loved one, so I have my mom’s phone next to mine in case I
need to look up names and contact info. Both phones received a text alert
at the same time. About ten minutes later, mom’s phone received a second
alert, but mind did not. Same phone, same cell provider, sitting
side-by-side, but different number of alerts. I saw others on Twitter who
received three. And I know several people who received none.

Legally, I want an opt-out feature (actually I want the system changed so
only those who opt-in receive these things), not just because it is Trump
who currently gets to decide when these alerts go out, but this system is
just begging to be hacked. And the consequences of such a hack could be
more severe and more dire than any hacked voting machines. Imagine every
cell phone getting a false alert about a North Korean nuke launch. No, this
is not a service I want in this America.
