I will second Kevin with a report from the North - has been a very tough
few days here in California. I woke up at 2:00 am Thursday, read about the
shooting in Thousand Oaks, and had reason to worry that my college son
(turning 21 in 2 days), may have been at that bar. I had a rough 90 Minutes
until I was able to confirm he was safe in his dorm. Truthfully, I kind of
lost it for a bit, and sleep-walked through the day yesterday. I know some
fathers were not as lucky. The phrase “I can’t...” is part of contemporary
jargon, but I never really understood it until now. I can’t let myself
really sit with what those parents are going though right now, it’s just a
bit too raw.

Like our friends in the southern part of the state, we are dealing with a
killer fire up North too. It is centered in kind of a sister community to
the town where I live, and I have a lot of friends and family who have been
evacuated, and some who have lost their homes. All that is directly
impacting me is the smoke, and it seems selfish to complain about that at
this point, but it is a real health problem (area public schools canceled
classes today), it is hard to see, and just about impossible to breathe
deeply without coughing. And most of the people in my county can not shake
traumatic memories from 13 months ago when fires stormed through our Valley
and killed some of our friends.

I know we are not supposed to talk about gun control after mass shootings,
or climate change after killer fires, but Jesus Christ, what exactly is it
going to take to get us to start doing something about these issues? I
suppose at least we can take comfort that our best minds and most sensitive
hearts are in the White House right now...
