For those who don't follow the Southern California news, every five to ten years, some sort of natural disaster befalls Malibu (my own personal recollection is hazy, so I'm uncertain whether they more recently faced landslides or a different batch of fires). Non-Californians tend to hear or read more about the Malibu fires as opposed to the recent fires that occurred where I used to live due to the amount of rich and/or famous people. The fires I experienced before my temporary relocation to the land of Cornhuskers didn't even make the big time when the region's nudist colony had to be evacuated (and I was certain at least CNN would have covered that story). Malibu is on the edge of the coast (literally), edge of the big city, and edge of an easily combustible patch of nature, so the argument could be made they have to expect this sort of thing... which is what Markoe wrote about as the described her own evacuation from the neighborhood.
