I feel the same way about the word recommend. If I bring something to your attention the the first time, I am commending it to your attention. The prefix re implies I have told you at least once already. I recommend “The Good Place” as I have praised the series several times in the past.
Likewise, a reunion can hardly occur if the parties involved have not left each other’s side prior to the gathering. Call it a union if you must, or something more evocative like an event or a happening or a gathering, but words have actual definitions. Just because others are casual with the English language doesn’t mean the rest of us just accept it. And don’t get me started on the bastardization of the word ultimate.
