I would imagine this is a combination of Netflix being a key partner in
some key international territories, and the fact that it's a solid awards
candidate.

Interestingly, while The Good Place is a "Netflix Original" in the UK, NBC
Universal has recently sold a second window rights package to FTA
broadcaster E4 in the UK. But I guess all of that adds to the overall
financial viability of the series.
