Your header matches most headlines for this story, but your comments are closer to what is happening. The main trend for ratings for Big Event programs is down, for reasons that are self-evident (fewer people watch regular television now). While ratings for Oscar were up this year over last, they were still I think second lowest in history (or at least a long time, depending how you count). The uptick almost certainly because of the presence of several mega-hits among nominees, and the Gaga performance buzz. Media has to stop comparing ratings for these kinds of events to even relatively recent history- no longer relevant without some kind of correction.
No host worked fine. The lesson here is to think more in terms of an opening act for the show (maybe with a shorter mid—show act as well). For the most part that is what hosts in last 15 years or so have been anyway.
