I bailed on The Orville after three episodes, when I figured out I'd rather
watch the early seasons of TNG that this show evokes for me.  (That Penny
Johnson Jerald - who plays the ship's doctor - had a recurring role in the
later seasons of Deep Space Nine reinforced the association.)

It's not bad, but it never really grabbed me.  It's not funny, which is fine.
Outside of McFarland's involvement, I never got the impression that they were
trying to be funny.  It seemed more intended to be an attempt at a science
fiction show where the spacefaring folks weren't heroes, just ordinary.  I
think too many people assumed a McFarland project would of course be funny that
they were nonplussed by the result.

My brother Allen is... trying very hard to get into this. The
lightheartedness is receding like a coastal tide, which must not be
helping.
