If it helps, there are some counties in the Husker state where they keep
the electricity, heat, and water on regardless of whether bills get paid
because of the sometimes harsh winters and the fear of finding Old
Macdonald frozen stiff in his outhouse.

The part of the pilot that frustrated me most was the idea of the neighbors
just showing up to the farm unannounced to surprise the new couple. In
actual towns, the neighbors are quite neighborly, and it might plausibly
happen as the episode showed, but — not stereotyping — Nebraska might be
one of the reddest states, and people who buy remote isolated properties do
so because they want to keep to themselves, and if you drive up their long
driveway unannounced, homeowners will see and hear you coming, so it won’t
be a surprise, and the owners typical response to uninvited guests who
traverse the path resembles skeet shooting.
