Ruben is not someone you’re likely to know, but it is likely he has served drinks to many people you’ve heard of. For over five decades he’s tended bar at my absolute favorite Hollywood watering hole, Musso and Frank. From Bob Hope to Steve McQueen to Sean Connery to The Rolling Stones (comics like Larry Miller and Greg Proops endlessly rave about the time they spend there), he’s served them all. He mixed the drinks strong, and I firmly believe Mussos intentionally keeps the prices higher than typical to avoid tourist clutter.
I’m getting back to work on a long unfinished novel, but if I were to pitch a TV series, it would be a series centered around Musso and Franks, and Ruben would be one of the principle characters. Sometimes it isn’t about how wealthy or influential or powerful you are; sometimes all that matters is to be respected, and to be good at whatever it is you do. That was Ruben. https://abc7.com/amp/food/bartender-marks-50th-anniversary-at-musso-and-frank/2496070/ https://munchies.vice.com/en_us/article/mgxn4q/las-longest-standing-bartender-has-86d-more-celebrities-than-you https://laist.com/2017/09/25/ruben_rueda.php -- Kevin M.
