In the media depiction of cancer it is a challenge the hero overcomes and then returns to the way things were. That is the way Trebek chose to frame his illness. I think it leads to a sort of denial where we want Trebek to be okay and he says he will be so he must be up to his hosting duties. I see two sides: Trebek is going through a difficult procedure and should get maximum rest and not go through the stress of doing the show, and the show is what gives Trebek a reason to get up in the morning and it should not be taken away from him.
