Credit Where Credit Is Due Dept.: I bitched about Colbert's sub-standard monologues from home, but he and Oliver were superb Monday night, as was Oliver's own show Sunday. I don't know if there was a pre-interview, but it sure didn't feel like it. It ended up being a great conversation between two guys who are basically peers, had nothing to plug, and were more interested in entertaining each other than in playing to the crowd. If this is what the next few weeks are going to be like, I look forward to them. I was, frankly, surprised that Colbert had those interviewing skills in him.
It reminded me of nothing so much as probably the last Late Show Robin Williams did with Dave. Rather than doing his usual "Isn't Robin wacky?" schtick, the two of them sat and reminisced about the early days at the Comedy Store. It was relaxed and spontaneous and two guys who met later success talking about starting out. Afterward, I tuned to NBC to catch Myers's show, but am currently suffering through Fallon talking to Jon Bon Jovi and, for the umpteenth time, Fallon showing has no business being on television.
