Jennings also recently joined the show as a consulting producer, so it
conceivably could be even easier.

I think Ken has a better chance of thinking it will fit into his schedule than
George Stephanopolous or Anderson Cooper. 40-odd taping days a year plus
promotional appearances isn't really a full time job, but it's a pretty serious
commitment when you add in a cross-country commute to get there, plus whatever
money or resources would be required for substitute anchors or broadcasts from
the LA bureau for days/weeks at a time.

In theory, he'd only have to go to L.A. twice a month, for a couple days at a
time, for tapings -- and he's already shown that he's more than willing to go
to L.A. for game show tapings (just this month, he's done both "Master Minds"
and "The Chase"). Of course, the producers might be hoping for someone who's
willing to put more time into it than that (promotional appearances, etc.).

How is this not Jennings' to lose?
He may not want the job. He lives in Seattle and does a twice a week podcast
with John Roderick. Under those circumstances it would be very disruptive to
take on hosting duties for a game show in LA.
