Not sure presentism applies here. It was a one-joke bit that was executed
well enough (though if you told me it was beaten to death, I wouldn't argue).
As a member of the target group I remember it being a sore spot then no more or
less than it would be now.
It wouldn't bother me at all if Mr. Shatner didn't use the socials that much
outside of promoting whatever project he's in, or new merch he has to sell. It
seems to encourage the cranky, old man part of him.
FWIW, last month was the centennial of Gene's birth, so between that and the
show's 55th anniversary on Wednesday, Rod will likely be in the entertainment
news for a little while longer.
