Yesterday while listening to the Maintenance Phase podcast I heard the phrase, 
“celebrity performance of authenticity” and that describes what Leno is doing 
here. It’s strange how much effort he puts into maintaining his Everyman 
persona even though there would be no consequences to him if he did enjoy fine 
dining or spend his Tonight Show money. He’s not going to be losing any 
bookings for it and I can’t imagine who would care. What the fact he brings 
this up publicly tells me is that he’s driven by a deep insecurity.
