I saw them in Red Bank, New Jersey on October 19.
It was a fun, wide-ranging show, and Micky Dolenz was still a fantastic
performer with a great voice and dynamic stage presence, but... "Papa Nez"
was in really bad shape. He couldn't play guitar anymore, and he was
shuffling across the stage the way my grandfather did when he was 90.
So I can't say this news is a huge surprise. But it's still so incredibly
sad. He wrote so many great songs, including some of my favorite Monkees
numbers.
During the pandemic and the last few SAD-suffused winters, I've relied on
harmony-heavy pop to get me through the dark times - The Beach Boys, The
Hollies, The Zombies, and The Monkees. I bought a box set of all their
albums and inundated myself in it for a while. It really did the job.
Michael Nesmith, even at his most bizarre, will always make me happy.
