He was great. And then…he wasn’t. He smartly quit coaching 5 years too soon, then stayed in broadcasting maybe ten years too long. His lasting influence on televised football has been horrendous, and we have only just started recovering. For decades commentators imitated the Madden shtick, combining bombast, faux every man self presentation, with self important analysis that, in the hands of most non-Maddens, was most often nonsense.
I still get a kick out of saying “doink” when a field goal attempt hits the upright, or reminding myself that one cheek equals two feet when looking at replays of receptions near the boundary.
