The story notes: “ Tirico was originally scheduled to stay in Beijing through Thursday before going to Los Angeles. NBC officials, though, have reiterated that his schedule was subject to change based on COVID-19 and other factors.”
Everything I could find about this online is just the original AP report. Left unexplained is, was the change based on COVID or “other factors”? Is the COVID exposure so bad there they were worried he would not be available for Super Bowl? Are they worried Putin is about to move on Ukraine, and travel might be disrupted? Did Tirico say something to piss off the Chinese and they want him out? I would like to see Tirico and NBC stay harder on the hard news aspects of these games, but to be fair they have had several segments which have not pulled too many punches. It’s possible the Chinese freaked, but I would put my money on NBC not wanting to risk their plans for pre-Super Bowl marathon by exposing Tirico to COVID.
