Smith noted their preferred usage back in 2019, so this isn't a recent
development, and arguably a black eye for the research staff. I'm a little
surprised it hasn't come up before, as stated pronoun preferences are becoming
more common.

The show has aired everywhere, so I'll take "non-spoiler" out of the subject
line and explain both of the below cryptic comments:
In the first round, in a category called Sams Club, the $800 clue was a photo,
and the text Ken read was, "In 2015, he took home four Grammys, including one
for the song 'Stay with Me.'" Sam Smith uses they/them pronouns -- I suspect
the fact-checkers on the "Jeopardy!" staff will henceforth be instructed to
double-check personal pronouns used in clues.
In the Double Jeopardy! round, the $800 clue in the category Bordering Russia
was, "The Kerch strait -- along with serious border issues -- separates Russia
from this country on the Black Sea." As the clue was on-screen, they put up a
graphic in the top left corner that read, "Recorded on January 11, 2022."

They seem to be getting more heat for a clue they did not explain regarding Sam
Smith.

Today's episode not only featured an on-air disclaimer regarding a clue, but
the fine folks in the social media department just posted the same disclaimer
on Twitter and Facebook.
