So… 2022 ratings 15.4 M, 2.9 in the demo (still may be revised).
2021 ratings 10.4 M, 2.1 in the demo. That makes 2022 a “56% increase in audience over last year <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/deadline.com/2021/04/2021-0scars-tv-ratings-academy-awards-low-abc-disney-1234744135/__;!!BZ50a36bapWJ!-mqBaLLJ7Ht1KmbAq8xQuyBKG5PCmD9yZ4Pal3-2XOzDqN_YfF5R3UcwTWWGXmjarw$> and 68% in the important demo. However, even with what looks like big leaps over 2021, the 2022 Oscars are still the second-lowest in history.” https://deadline.com/2022/03/2022-oscars-tv-ratings-rise-academy-awards-abc-disney-will-smith-chris-rock-1234989041/ <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/deadline.com/2022/03/2022-oscars-tv-ratings-rise-academy-awards-abc-disney-will-smith-chris-rock-1234989041/__;!!BZ50a36bapWJ!-mqBaLLJ7Ht1KmbAq8xQuyBKG5PCmD9yZ4Pal3-2XOzDqN_YfF5R3UcwTWVrYJ2Now$> https://deadline.com/2021/04/2021-0scars-tv-ratings-academy-awards-low-abc-disney-1234744135/ <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/deadline.com/2021/04/2021-0scars-tv-ratings-academy-awards-low-abc-disney-1234744135/__;!!BZ50a36bapWJ!-mqBaLLJ7Ht1KmbAq8xQuyBKG5PCmD9yZ4Pal3-2XOzDqN_YfF5R3UcwTWWGXmjarw$> I wrote here *On Mon, 26 Apr 2021 at 2:06 PM: * “if next year ratings return to their pre COVID declining trend, we would expect them to rebound to around 20M, or twice last night. That does seem optimistic, as it is hard to turn back the clock on viewing habits.” That seems right. Even with all of the modern updates (like having the three extreme sports dudes on the platform, and shunting off a number of categories to be presented live off camera, then clumsily crammed back into the prime time program in edited form) and the most dramatic moment in the history of the Oscars, that one would think would have driven millions of Americans monitoring results on Twitter to their televisions(not sure how that would have impacted final numbers) the Oscar ratings, while of course higher than last year, did not return to the point on a declining curve that we would have expected had their been no pandemic (or, to put it another way, should we have expected the decline to be continuous or linear). Last year ratings went up about ½ a million in the final numbers, so it is possible this years final might be as high as 16M, but that would still be 20% below where I would have expected them to be. I interpret as suggesting that the pandemic accelerated the decline in linear television viewing by about 20% Still, in context that is a pretty good number. If it is no longer true (if it ever was) that a billion people watch the Oscars, it is still the second most watched program in the United states. Oscar ratings this year were about twice as high as the highest rated regular (non- NFL) TV show, 60 Minutes: 7.5, .67. Its ratings were about as high as a regular season Sunday Night Football Game (Week 11: *Sunday Night Football:* Steelers vs. Chargers : 14.55 million, 8.05 rating) Oscar was higher than a World Series Game or an NBA Finals game (don’t have those numbers at my fingertips, but pretty sure). The Super Bowl of course continues to be an exception to the otherwise iron rule that TV ratings are sinking. The 2022 SB was the second most-watched Super Bowl in league history with 101.1 million television viewers tuned in on NBC and Telemundo. Meanwhile, the game drew a record streaming audience of 11.2 million through Peacock and other streaming services. https://sportsnaut.com/nfl-tv-ratings-viewership-numbers/ On Wed, 28 Apr 2021 at 7:25 AM PGage <[email protected]> wrote: …the decline from last year [2020, to this year 2021] 56% by my calculation… This moves the Oscars closer to the Grammys in terms of COVID decline, and away from the Golden Globes. More symbolically it keeps the ratings in double digit millions [10.4 Million], which Deadline and a few other publications trivialized when they reported the revision, but made a big deal of when they reported the original single digit. https://deadline.com/2021/04/2021-0scars-tv-ratings-academy-awards-low-abc-disney-1234744135/ <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/deadline.com/2021/04/2021-0scars-tv-ratings-academy-awards-low-abc-disney-1234744135/__;!!BZ50a36bapWJ!-mqBaLLJ7Ht1KmbAq8xQuyBKG5PCmD9yZ4Pal3-2XOzDqN_YfF5R3UcwTWWGXmjarw$> *On Mon, 26 Apr 2021 at 2:06 PM PGage <[email protected] <[email protected]>> wrote:* If next year ratings return to their pre COVID declining trend, we would expect them to rebound to around 20M, or twice last night.
