The apology is pretty good. It would have been better if given during his acceptance speech last night*. He huddled with his PR advisor, to clear if she tried to get him to do this and failed, or encouraged him to try to justify himself.
Even if he doesn’t mean it, it could be helpful in shutting down an unfortunately large fraction (I hope still minor) of folks, many African American, who are insisting respect for Black women required a violent response. *The more I think about it though, the more I think they should have asked Smith to exit the Hall during that first commercial break, stashed him in a back room, had the Director of the film accept his Oscar and give it to him. I don’t blame them for not doing it, they had little time to think and lots if factors to weigh. But it would have deprived him of the platform to justify himself, provided some real penalty, and, most important, ensured no further violence. It’s not impossible he could have hit someone else, or spied Rock in the wings and gone after him.
