Congratulations to JB, for not only not going 0-fer, but for winning the biggest Grammy (among his 5), Album of the year. I am always shocked when something I like wins a Grammy, as I am so far out of the demo (I had to Google Olivia Rodrigo, then I think I remembered fast forwarding thru her on SNL in the last year or two). But his album really was my favorite this year.
A big year for late night TV musicians, as Questlove was the winner of the Best Documentary Oscar that got overshadowed by Will Smith’s nonsense. That was a remarkable piece of work. I’m not so surprised that Batiste doesn’t do more of his own solo work on the show, or that he doesn’t contribute more as a side kick (in fact, I think the show is better the less it tries to use him in that way). It’s more that the depth and quality of his musical signature does not seem to come through on that show. I feel like we get a much clearer sense of that signature from Doc, Paul and Questlove. Though truthfully I don’t watch Colbert that regularly anymore so maybe that has changed.
