I heard (or thought I heard) a brief mention of Jon's previously announced
role in "The Color Purple" during the conversation last night. As for Jon's
wife, I wouldn't expect to hear anything absent something definitive like
remission, completion of treatment, etc.

Does that mean it’s not due to poor health of Jon’s wife, or is that some
weird Catholic way of saying it is?

Colbert mentioned last night - at the end of a segment where Jon Batiste did
the Colbert Questionert - that Jon will be taking the rest of the summer off
("for personal time... for the best of reasons," Colbert said), with Louis Cato
leading the band until September.

Colbert also mentioned that Batiste will be out until he's done filming "The
Color Purple," so it's probably a combination of those two and what I assume
will be his eventual departure. There's also a new enclosure around the
bandstand that one assumes will come down when there's a piano.
In other news, Armisen is back on drums in 8G this week after a long absence.
Marnie Stern still missing and unaccounted for; full credits ran Monday night,
but the slide identifying the band was skipped.
