I watched some of this yesterday and I was impressed by the presentation (less so by the music). What has become possible to do when the venue is designed to have cameras and with modern digital equipment, both video and audio, is terrific. Maybe it’s because I was brought up with concert documentaries made by young guys with ancient equipment and no budget, but Loolapalooza looked and sounded great. I’ll watch more even though I’m not likely to find any new bands to follow. Another thing I liked was there were no commercial breaks in the middle of an act.
One reason I tuned in was because this is probably going to be a big part of the music scene in the future. It might not have made technical or financial sense in the past to do a live TV transmission of a concert or a festival in the past unless it was a one-off like Live Aid. Unless some disaster strikes we should expect to see more of these on subscription services in the future.
