Having watched the finale, I still assert the Rudd announcement should have
been handled as a spoiler. It came out less than 12 hours after the episode
was made available and that’s not enough of a window to assume people will
have watched it. I’m not especially sensitive to spoilers so I won’t
belabor the point.

Selena Gomez’s character holds the show together. Martin and Short need
someone to keep them grounded. I really like that Mabel is drawn up to be
emotionally closed and an introvert because the traditional idea of
bringing in a young woman to balance two older men is to use her as window
dressing.

It’s just a fact of life that people who generate some heat on SNL are
going to be considered comedy rock stars. A few continue to hit after they
leave the show and while others can’t live up to it, they can certainly
find a place to do good work. On this show, even with the name recognition,
Fey was given a character to do and she did it well.

Amy Schumer did some popular comedy specials, got a high profile tour or
two, got a movie, and it seems she has nothing to follow it up with. She
added nothing to the show.
